The Free File Alliance, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has announced the early opening of the Free File program for the 2025 tax season. As of January 10, 2025, taxpayers with a 2024 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less can access free federal tax preparation and e-filing software at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile.
This year’s program offers eligible taxpayers – approximately 100 million people or 70% of all filers – access to industry-leading tax software at no cost. The coalition includes eight tax software companies: 1040Now, Inc.; 1040.com (Drake); ezTaxReturn.com; FileYourTaxes.com; On-Line Taxes (OLT.com); TaxAct; TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA); and TaxSlayer.
Tim Hugo, Executive Director of the Free File Alliance, emphasized the program’s accessibility: “Even taxpayers with small businesses, gig income, and rental homes can use Free File as long as their AGI is $84,000 or below.” He also highlighted the program’s security measures, noting the Alliance’s participation in the IRS Security Summit Initiative to protect taxpayers’ personal information.
The Free File program has provided over 75 million returns valued at an estimated $3 billion in free tax software over the last 23 years. Users can access the service via computer or mobile devices, using either the IRS2Go app or a web browser.
Starting January 27, 2025, Free File Fillable Forms will also become available for those familiar with tax law, regardless of income level.
